Our new to us Hunter is called 'The Sail Boat' and we are definately going to be changing the name. Both of us being from the East Coast,I've been Screeched in, are partial to Hearts Content. I was looking at another town on the coast but I was not going to win that debate. Don't ask look it up, you'll figure it out. Now the rule of thumb seems to be that it is worse than bad luck to Re-Name a boat. What research has found though is that if a Maden were to 'PEE' in the bilge this can counteract that bad Karma. Are there any other protocols that need to be followed? If a Maiden were to be unavailable would a born again Maiden do? And is there a time requirement that has to be followed as well? For Any Non-Canadians look at the east coast of NFLD. We need to avoid bad Karma, any help/advise is appreciated.

If you gave me a dog called Spot and I decided to call it Rover, what the hell does that have to do with the hound? If I adopt an 11-year-old kid named Charles and when I get him home say I'm gonna call you Bob...that's a problem...but a boat? Come on. Call it a piece a garbage- who cares!

Here's how you rename a boat. 1. Take the old name off. 2. Put the new name on. 3. Celebrate with a bottle of champaign. I've done it twice. No bad luck and I much prefer the new names.

Come on guys is all about tradition. Of course is not for the boat's benefit it is for the owner. It shows that you care first of all about the history of sailing, second it shows your commitment to do things right which will reflect in seamanship, maintenance and safety. A ceremony like this is the closest that we the common people will get the closest to commisioning, christening and launching a ship. If all fails it is a dam good excuse for a party with your family members and friends. Make a big deal out of it.

Don't Ignore the traditions of the sea.
Last fall we had a great time going through the regimine of deNaming our ex boat as we wanted to move it to our new boat. We had been told that our new boat still carried two names as the PO had not done a proper job of denaming prior to slapping on his choice. So we had two more denaming proceedures to take care of that. The last thing we did was rename our boat with the name rescued from our exboat. Could have done it all with a single edge razor blade ... but where's the fun in that? the crowd on the dock enjoyed me making a fool of myself ... we got fish drunk ... used up a case of wine ... and had a really great afternoon. I used John Vigors (linked above) suggested remarks. Good Luck to you in what ever you decide to do.

Kevin, we had a really nice Hunter 27 named Caliban II, we did not change the name, the boat burnt to the "ground", she was on the hard, our new to us Hunter 30 got the name changed from Lang Yu to Nauti Dreams 5 years ago and so far no bad karma. Fair winds Ron & Anne

Conflicting Information
I have read two peices of advice/direction about old name or new name. 1) Take everything with the old OFF of the boat,then do the DeNaming proceedure. 2) Do not put anything on the boat with the NEW name until you have satisfied the ReNaming proceedure. The article did say it is permissable to add the NEW name to the topsides and/transome prior to ReNmaing while still on the hard, but you must keep it covered until after the ReNaming proceedure has been completed. (My thought on this apparent conflict is that spirits of the winds and the sea are mindful of the difficulty involved in applying the name while afloat. It appears from this that they are a compassionate lot ... as long as you do your part in sharing the christening libation with them.) Good Luck ... Have Fun. BILLJ
