I will be visiting New Bedford, Mass this coming September and would like to do some sailing on Buzzards Bay, in addition to taking a #103 class at a ASA or US sail school. The nearest school I have found is in Boston which will be too far for me. Is this correct or have I missed something ? Thank you.

To Boston from N. Bedford

To get to Boston from New Bedford is about 45-50 miles. Going to downtown Boston during rush hour (and return) will take you about 1.5 hours each way. No traffic - 1 hr each way. There is highway all the way. From NB Take Rt 140N to Rt 24N to Rt 93N/128S (I know, different directions. But that's New England) to 93N into the city.

There are quite a number of sailing schools in Newport, RI, which is probably closer to New Bedford, and certainly easier to get to, than Boston. As for sailing on Buzzards Bay, we have done that many times, and it can be an "interesting" place to sail. It is often very choppy and uncomfortable, especially in the Northeastern end of the bay. Good luck. Carl and Jule s/v 'Syzygy'
