My m-25 Universal after a log run 4-6 hour at high RPMs 2500 builds up added fluid in the oil sump. Oil level to high oil light comes on and all that. I change the oil and the filter and do the same run at 2000RPMs don't seem to have any problems. Any thoughts on how and why.

Not sure if it helps, but I have seen a few times when a diesel leaks fuel (like from a block mounted fuel pump) into the oil system. May be the HP Injector pump?

Just an idea.

check the diaphragm in the lift pump. Diesel fuel is getting into the oil.

Could also be your raw water pump. Is it weeping through the weep holes?

What is the color of the oil in the sump when it gets to high? It can tell you wether it is water or diesel fuel getting into the sump. If it remains black but gets thinner it is fuel but if it gets an emusified witish gray then it is water. I have never seen an oil to high alarm light. Why it does it at 2500 RPM and not at 2000 RPM can be a mistery but once you figure out if it is fuel or water the answer may become easier to diagnose.

Do you realize there is essentially a "cork" at the end of the dipstick? You must remove the dipstick and let the oil settle before reading the level.

I just saw the same thing on a trawler I was on, the oil would thin out, pressure drop and oil volume increased. The oil was black so it wasn't water.

Thanks Stu, I was wondering why there was nothing on the dip stick when I would remove it but when reinstalled and drawn again it read fine.

I agree it's either water or diesel. Could have a failing injector pump. There is a thread currently running on the Yahoo C30 group which sounds like a similar issue.

"I agree it's either water or diesel. Could have a failing injector pump."

Seems like back to square one. Do not settle on a diagnosis until you have eliminated all the other usual possibilities. Observe the color of the oil, run some tests and increase the probabbilities of a correct diagnosis. Not saying it could not be the injector pump but right now it is probably a 60% to 40% probability.

Interesting how alike we all are. I am the one who started the thred on the Yahoo C30 site regarding "Water in Oil". Well it is in fact diesel oil and I just determined tonight that I have a bad front cylinder. I dont know whether its an injector or rings yet. Could it be the injector pump itself??? Its a 1983 M25. Can Too Much Oil Damage an Engine?

A higher oil level in the pan to the point where your connecting rods or the crankshaft are dragging through the oil will at least affect performance. At worst it will foam up the oil to the point where the oil pump is pumping foam and you do not get the proper lubrication as the foam is mostly air.

Beyond the froth, one may see oil leaking from areas or passages meant only for breathing. In extreme cases, (Not COMMON and maybe just an urban legend) an engine can "hydrolock" meaning there's no room for the pistons to move within their cylinders and things break internally. I have heard of blowing crank main seals as well as plugs out of the heads on gas engines after oil passes the rings and fills the cylinders.

Again, one would need to over fill by quite a bit for this to occur if at all.

I just replaces my fuel pump as the yanmar uses the cam shaft to pump. When the diaphragm goes fuel will leak into engine. The main gaskets on mine were going.... Diaphragm still good so I had no fuel / oil mix but mech told me to check oil level for exactly what your seeing.

Good luck
