This problem is is on my "FIRST 42" but should be common to any performancemodel built. Our 42 has been turned into a full cruiser including solar pannels and wind charger but my problem is at anchor. In the past six years aboard "R3", our anchoring has been within a tidal areawhere the change in direction of current has been slight, but this past week we were exploring the California Delta area and decided to run up the river to Sacramento, over 100 miles inland where the current in the river gets to moving pretty fast at times. We anchored out in a wide spot in the river with a depth at only 20 feet. I keep 400 feet of chain on each side but only dropped about 100 feet or so. Now comes the exciting part... My 42 has the deep keel and tall rig, so I'm about 8 feet or so down.. The boat took on a mind of its own and started getting lift off the keel and rudder in the current.. she would take off to one side dragging that 100 foot of chain until the anchor was square off to the left, and at the end of the run, the boat would nose over and take off to the other side dragging the chain, swinging 100 feet to either side. I did stop the running from side to side by turning the rudder to one side just a little and it would set to one side but I dont like the boat setting there with presure on it for hours at a time...... So the question is, anyone have any ideas on how to get her to set idel in the current. My only Idea is to stay out of those areas but were on our way out for the next few years and I'm sure I'll face the problem again.thanks, Randy on R3
