From the trani's viewpoint....

I got this info from the Yanmar dealer in Seattle, MER. It all depends on the type of trani, mechanical or hydraulic. If you have a mechanical gear trani, like most of the Hunters, it can be in reverse or neutral. If it is in neutral, the lower shaft is physically disconnected from the engine. The shaft just rotates in the gear box. Since the gears are sitting in oil, so no problem If you have hydraulic gear, then it is a big no-no, so put the trani in reverse. As for the drag or no drag issue, I will leave the topic to those of you with more knowledge on that.

Does anyone know?

about a Paragon SAO trany,I've searched and found no info on what to do with this,I used to leave it in neutral but felt the turning prop would cause drag so I now keep it in foward cause it locks in that gear. It will not lock in reverse because of design reverse is clutch plates and the more pressure you put on the gear shift the harder it holds. anyone got input on this?

Perry, Be very careful with any tool that will

mar the propeller shaft. Sharp tool marks will serve as stress risers and can give rise to cracking and a broken shaft.
