I am closing on the boat Friday 3-3-06. Presently the boat is documented and it will cost $600 to transfer it. If we delete from USCG documentation and go with State registration it will cost about $200 and we will have to display TX numbers instead just the tax stamp. I lean toward continuing the documentation but I can't find a good reason. Coments Please

Do you plan to

Take it outside the US? Only to Mexico? How do Mexican authorities deal with foreign boat? Are they satisfied with Texas registration? It is my understanding that state registration is adequate in the Atlantic basin. I don't know about points farther afield.

Main reason my dockmate gives for

documenting his is "I don't like them ugly registration numbers on my hull". It's free to renew every year, just sign the card and return. The Doc number should already be someplace permanant on the inside of the hull. May make future sale just a tad more trouble free. Not great reasons I admit but reasons. It's gonna be $600 cause your broker wants a Doc. service to do it. If you did it yourself only a fee of $84 I think. However takes them a couple months to get your COD to you and technically you have nothing in interim. However a letter from a Doc. service that transfer application has been made IS considered adequate for most authorities(including marina companies)in this period. So, in purchase situation can be a catch 22 where it's easier for all concerned to use the service. Loan holders may require it also.

Do reg requirements differ between states?

Here is RI, you are required to register the boat regardless of whether it is documented. The only distinction here is no need to put number on the hull exterior. I assume CA is different?

Yeah...

do it yourself for under $100 for documentation and think twice about doing business with anyone who would lie to you like that! You print out the form online fill it in almost like a change of address form and send it in with the right fees. 800# support is right there for the asking. Jeez, it's not so daunting.

Oh BTW...

here's another site you can go to to check the boat's "documentation history". Do some more research before dropping your pants.

I think it will cost you about $84.

Bob: I think it will cost you about $84 to tranfer the documentation. There may be some other charges if you have a mortgage and/or need to add additional owners. We are in the process of doing the same thing within the next week.

Registration requirements do vary by state,

here in Calif. boat is either state registered or Documented, one or other, not both. Some require both, some states allow doc. to extend to tender, others like here, require seperate state reg. for dinghy if it has an engine.
