To be 20 years younger

A friend of a friend of mine died last week. He was in the process of a total refit on a Tayana 37. Just had to go and take a look. What a boat. He was preparing for a solo circumnavigation, and spared no expense in equipment. New water maker, AC, Genset, new Kubota engine, new mast and boom, all new rigging, and winches. Total rewire. Most of the major items are installed, with the exception of the Kubota, which is still sitting on the shipping skid. I'm thinking it could be bought for a song, but I just do not want to start a project at my age. If anyone on this board is interested, I'll pass on some more info. Would certainly like to see this boat in some loving hands, because it has been truly loved and cared for.

I guess that I into the "I wish I was twenty years older stage" because then I wouldn't be so tempted. I started Bietzpadlin when I was fifty and Nancy was diagnosed with cancer when we launched the boat ten years later and we didn't get a chance to test the boat as we built her. So now she is a very solid boat for the Chesapeake and we enjoy her here.

A well known custom cruising sailboat builder once told me that a few times a year he has to tell a prospective client that he won't build them a boat because their health is going. They're not steady on a deck or nimble down a companionway.

He said it's the saddest moment because they always know he's right. They waited too long. The dream is lost forever.

I call foul on that one. Never crush a persons dream regardless of how old they are. If I had a 100k to spend on a boat and someone told me I was too old to enjoy it I would say "thanks, you just lost a 100k." I plan on living a long time and I also plan on being the oldest person to circumnavigate the globe (what ever that age is for that record).

Of course the fellow can buy a boat from someone else so no dream is being "crushed" by the builder's caution. But I disagree with you. Being offshore in a cruising sailboat requires a certain level of physical fitness. Otherwise, you endanger yourself and those who may be called to rescue you. Your safety is your own business? When you are old and infirm, will you leave the EPIRB ashore?

This particular boat builder builds some of the most bullet proof bluewater boats around. He genuinely worries about the safety of his clients and feels responsibility for their safety when sailing one of his boats. He's also lost friends at sea - although none on a boat that he's built. As you note, his concern for his fellow man may have cost him substantial money (and his boats cost a lot more than $100k). I wish more business men would value something above money.

Ross-I haven't heard Far Away Places in years. My garndfather claimed that he actually wrote that song. He was a career navy chief who was stationed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in the late thirties/early forties. He said he wrote the song for my grandmother who was a graduate of the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. He couldn't read music so he took it to a songwriter to have it transcribed and according to him they stole the song. He claimed that the song had been played at a recorded Camel caravan radio show for servicemen and the announcer had credited him as the writer. Years ago my dad tried to find evidence of the recording, but could never find any proof. It makes a great story whether it is true or not.

never, ever decide for another what they can or can't do! You look at some of the vets that have been all shot up and see what they do with what they have left and you will never say can't again.

I have to agree. Who appointed the boatbuilder God? Who knows but the boat may give the buyer a new lease on life - health is 90% state of mind. Conversely, the crushing of the dream may in itself be fatal. Myself, I'd rather die in the accomplishment of my dream than pining away on shore. And what about offspring, spouses, friends or even hired crew to help sail her?
