The back stay on our previous boat was adjustable. THe boat did point higher with it tenisioned. I would reduce tension going down wind, but could really tell no difference in preformance. Some of the better sailors around here tell me to forget the adjuster and just tighten up the back stay and leave it alone. So the question is to back stay or not? Is there an advantage to easing back stay tension at different points of sail? Thanks, Ron

It depends on how the boat is rigged
an adjustable backstay on a fractional rig allows you to bend the mast to flatten the sail. On a mast head rig adjusting the tension on the back stay will tighten the forestay and help to reduce the forestay sag to the lee.

The boat is a 28-2 shoal draft Pearson with masthead rig. Its kind of a little cruiser that I,am trying to make go fast. Have you heard this before? Thanks, Ron

Backstay
Ron: I would follow the advise of the sailors in your area that you reffered to in your message. Youn can't BEND that mast. All you can do is RAKE it back. In order for you to acheive increased speed you would be better off concentarating on all the other sail trim controls for your mainsail and jib.
