Labor Day, I hope everyone has the day off and that they use it to connect with the people they love!
My day/(isn't it great that it is always attached to a weekend) weekend with my wife on the boat. remnants of Fay are here and that is my wifes favorite weather on the boat. Cool, overcast, drizzly, oh yeah...
My wife will hunker down with a favorite read and justtttt about Sunday evening start to relax.
Then she remembers all the work she was loaded with on Labor Day afternoon.
Being key personel or being a sole proprieter, life can run into itself.
If, you have kids at home, let nothing stand between you. That time will not just be a memory for you when they leave, but a memory for them and the way it was...
Have a great sailing weekend!

Going to be watching

Probably going to spend more time sitting here watching where Gustav is headed than sailing. Had planned on taking the boat and having the mast pulled Tues. May be a little delay.

I'll be saving lives

While you all go sailing, and dodging the drunks on the water, I'll be working an Emergency Department in Tampa, and that's OK because I choose to work every Sat Sun and Mon. It gives me the rest of the week to have the gulf almost empty of other boates.

I prefer to sail in a relaxed environment, my wife works the same schedule, and my other sailng buddies are retired and almost always available for a sail. When we leave the dock most of the other boats remain in the marina. There are times when I would like to have the weekends off, till I see the results of the boating accidents, sun burns, and drunks coming through the doors.

I wish you all a great and safe weekend, and pray I don't see any of you in one of my beds. I'll go out and celebrate on Wednesday and Thursday with an overnight sail, if Gustav permits.

Retired

Since I am retired and get to go sailing every day
and any day we want we are not planning too much
sailing for the crazy holiday.
We will be going mostly to some BBQ's over the holiday
and seeing a lot of family and friends and may do a day
sail and sleep on the boat at the marina.
It does get crazy here on weekends with lots of sailboat sails
and power boats out on the water and I am sure the holiday
weekend will be even worse,so we well just relax at the marina
say hello to all the other boaters that we only see on weekends
and go to some parties too.
Everyone have a safe holiday and hope the nuts don't hurt anybody.
We look forward to sailing when the kids are back to school and we
have all that water to enjoy less crowded.

!@#$%^&*

preparing the house and boat for Gustav. Have already been warned by the Marina 48 hours within landfall she has to be out of her slip and anchored out somewhere. Not happy.

Great week so far

Wife and I sailed over from Chicago to New Buffalo, MI. Sitting in the New Buffalo Marina enjoying the area. Had a great sail over. Close reached most of the way Tuesday (50 nm) with 18 - 22 knot winds and 3 - 4 foot waves. Saw only 2 other sailboats and no stinkpots around.

Hope everyone has a great Holday and you guys on the coast make it through OK.

Happy Sailing

Thanks for the good wishes, RW.. I hope yall have a fine one! Smooth Sailing !
We here on the Gulf coast are getting stuff in place for a possible hit from Gustav. Panic is already setting in here at Baton Rouge.. No water or paper products available today at stores, which is amazing considering how long a time it is before the storm makes landfall and considering that the prediction models haven’t been working very well. I see Nice N Easy and SeaDance are getting stuff ready on their boats too.. I have to go and do my boat prep tomorrow because New Orleans may evacuate on Saturday, while the storm is still over 500 miles away, with an indefinite landfall.. As the city starts its exodus, it will be impossible to get to the marina, about 60 miles east, so a worst case preparation is necessary.. All superfluous windage off and many lines applied..

Hopefully...

I'll get my wiring project done in time. My wife, two friends and our two dogs and I are set to take a sail down to Half Moon Bay with a group of other sailboats from out yacht club. Wife feels more comfortable doing it with others around. Hopefully, this will be first of a longer string of longer cruises.

Next is Drake's Bay and after that -- Zihuatanejo, Hawaii... ???

(Ain't it great to be retired?)

Chicago-New Buffalo

Hey Ken,

The (acting) Admiral and I made that sail last week as part of a week-long cruise:

Day 1: Chicago-New Buffalo
Day 2: New Buffalo-South Haven
Day 3: South Haven-Saugatuck
Day 4: Saugatuck-Holland-St Joe's
Day 5: St Joe's-New Buffalo
Day 6: New Buffalo-Chicago

We had a great time, although I think we pushed the agenda a bit. We had days of East winds over on the Michigan side, so were able to beam reach up and back, that's never happened to me before. I particularly like NB (have a drink @ The Stray Dog) and S Haven. Hope your trip is as good!

Gustav

Hope all the gulf coast people come out of this OK. Seems to be certain that someone is going to get hit pretty hard. I am going to start battening down the hatches tomorrow. Sort of good timing, as I was about to pull the sails and boom this weekend so I could get the mast pulled next week. Two birds with one stone so to speak. As I did with Katrina, going to anchor out in the canal behind the house. Three anchors on one side, pilings on the other. Made it through Katrina that way, so should be OK. Seadance, worried about you guys. Katrina took out a lot of boats in the back bay. Do you have enough anchor, and do you need any help. I would think that the minumum anchor for your boat would be a 35lb. or bigger plow. Give me a call if you need any help. Kloudie1, if you need anyhing done that I can do, I am much closer to Mandeville than you are. Also, any of you out of towners who have boats in the Slidell area, I will help in any way I can. Just drop me an email and tell me what I can do. Maybe we will get lucky and this thing will fizzle out, or maybe go into Mexico.

Heat Wave

Up here in NorCal we are having a nice little heat wave for the weekend. Just about 10kt of breeze and temps in the 90's. In the 'slot' (under the Golden Gate Bridge) is where the AC is though. Taking some coworkers out tonite, bbq with the admiral tomorrow night at the slip then anchoring outside of a music festival in Sausalito to catch some free tunes on Saturday, single hand on Sunday then maybe back to land on Monday! Man I love long warm weekends!!
Cheers all!

Nice N Easy

We have enough anchor I hope....we have a friend that owns a motor boat that offered to tow us out since our engine still won't start..we"ll see if he pulls through for us. Going down tomorrow to take off whatever I can off of her and plug her up. We are going to get her out in the Back Bay on Sunday before Keesler tries to tow her out. They will charge us, drop her off wherever and not set the anchor so we are trying to avoid that.

I am worried Phil about the Back Bay, my whole heart and soul is in that boat..the kids and I had a great time on her this year and it would break my heart if she sank. I don't care about the pilfereing but just don't sink on me.

I am trying to think of a good spot to anchor her in.

Any advice on how to prepare her better please list!

Thanks for thinking of us.

John, That was our original plan too!

Glad to hear you enjoyed, we may try again next year. Weather didn't cooperate this past weekend... All the marinas were filled for Labor Day weekend (I'll know better next time). Got to NB and decided to stay a couple of days. Met another couple from Chicago who sailed up Monday in 7+ foot seas and 20+ knots on the nose in a 31 foot Newport. Took them 2 days to get over the trip and their dog was traumatized.
