Title for a dinghy?

Speaking of trailers, I bought my H260 in North Carolina. The trailer had a license plate on it. When I registered my boat with SC I asked about the trailer. The sweet nice lady said, “That’s something they do up there. You don’t need to register it here.
Don't worry. They probably already made up on that through the personal property tax on the boat. BTW, if you ever get around to registering a dinghy for your boat please name it Tadpole.

I am trying to recall whether or not I really got a title for my Zodiac in Michigan.
I bought it new and I have a “certificate of origin” which I used to obtain my state registration. The state dutifully sends me a reminder to obtain a state sticker every third year, so they get their money. I just wonder if I am going to need to get a copy of a title somehow when I sell it.

No. You will give the buyer a bill of sale. That will serve him/her to title the boat and get new registration sticker.

State stickers provide funding to the state boat system. They are not used to protect a chain of titled owners. Partly because the costs in the past have been low for the dinghy level boats (compared to cars) not requiring loans to fund the purchase so no bank lobbying for title regulation. State regulations are not consistent so being able to track across state lines is limited.

For commerce the Coast Guard maintains the only reliable boat documentation system. Pleasure boats also can use this system if the boat meets the minimum size based on “tonnage“.

Just renewed my B32 online in MD. It is documented, so it cost only 10 bucks for the new sticker good for 2 years.

Doug, don't just "wonder". Inquire NOW- before you actually need to sell it.
