As so often what happens when something new comes along that is going to solve all your problems, it is later found out the cure is worse than the problem. "If it's too good to be true, it probably is." Remember those air ionizers? Kill mold and mildew? Later it was found that they also are harmful to fiberglass gel coat, neoprene, and peoples health! What about these titanium dioxide coated light bulbs? The advertising says they will eliminate musty odors and destroy biologically based, odor-causing molecules floating in the air. Sounds like something really suited for the inside of a boat - but are there any negative effects? There are numerous web pages tooting the advantages of these bulbs but none that I've found that provide anything negative, other than, say, cost (up to $40 ea.). One place I read that even though the bulb life can be up to 10,000 hours, apparently the titanium dioxide coating starts to disappear in only 6,000 hours. Ozonelite (ozonelite.com, http://www.ozonelite.com) and Fresh2 (www.fresh2.com, http://www.fresh2.com/) — are compact fluorescents coated with titanium dioxide, a powder form of the mineral titanium. The cost: $40 for Ozonelite's 23-watt bulb (equivalent to 100-watt incandescent); $20 for two 23-watt Fresh2 bulbs. Question: Anybody have any input on these things? (Especially any negative side effects) ehponline link: http://www.ehponline.org/docs/2001/109-4/innovations.html

Titanium dioxide is the pigment in white paint

In crystaline form it makes a rather pretty gem stone. But if a product sounds too good to be true it usually is. I have watched them come and go and very few stand the test of time.
