I have a 1990 28'hunter. My shaft is showing signs of corrosion, therefore I plan on replacing the shaft and cutlas bearing this spring. I contacted Hunter on procedures to do this and they said that they do not have guidelines on this... since they build new, not replace.... Has anyone done this before that could give me some tips to follow.... I am confident that I can do the job... just don't want to do something "stupid" or do it "the hard way"... Would appreciate any tips. Shaun - in sunny Tacoma Wash.

Haven't Done it, but have a question?

We have a '91 H28. Just curious about how your corrosion occurred. Is it electrolysis? What happened?

Shaun: I don't think that a shop is really going to charge very much to do this job. The biggest expense is going to be the shaft and the bearing. A new shaft is going to cost about $100/ft. They can machine one exactly to the specs of the existing one. Would think by the time you have the boat pulled and try to do this you may be better off having them do it and also check the alignment on your engine too. I would think that this is only an hour or two labor or so once the boat is on the hard.

Why I am replacing the shaft....

Electrolysis is the cause. I have owned my boat for about a year. During the survey - at time of purchase - the shaft showed signs of electrolysis - being a bronze (not stainless steel) shaft - there were obvious signs - discoloration of the shaft.... you can scrape away layers of the metal... not good since this makes the shaft brittle.... so I plan on replacing when I pull her to paint the bottom.... I would rather spend the money on a new toy... but I need to get the shaft : ) .... don't want to think about the potential damage if my shaft fails ....

Its in the archives-

I've seen a detailed description on this site within the last year or so. Search for cutlass bearing and/or shaft strut. J. McCue
