As I sail in shallow water I wish to mount a depth sounder through the hull below the bow I'm very wary of making " ... holes in my new boat " .. especially below the water line ,so would appreciate any tips or advice from anyone who has done so ( ...successfully ! ) ........Robin.

You might be able to install the transducer inside the hull and shoot through the hull. If you have a solid fiberglass (no core, no voids) hull, you can usually do this.

it inside. The key, of course, is to make sure there are no air pockets. The archives are full of good info, but to summarize, you can use anything from a shearable caulk (NOT permanent, as in don't use 5200!) or, as others have done, buy a $2 wax toilet ring, and stick the transducer in it (with no air pockets). This is a temporary solution that can last years! To find the spot that works best, you can simply shoot it thru a bag filled with water until you find what spot works best.

As usual good advice given already. One more thing you can do. After you get it installed and working make yourself a lead line if you don't already have one, and drop it over the side as close as possible to the transducer location. Check the readout against the lead line and you will know exactly how accurate the sounder is, and which way to adjust if it has any adjustment.
