We are hoping to do more extended cruising aboard Windy City, our Catalina 36. Just bought a plastic lid & astroturf & will try to get our 2 yr. mixed breed terrier, Breeze, to use it for potty duty. Sure would make our mornings easier! Besides, when we overnight at Shark River - there is no place to dinghy her in! Anyone have any tips to get her comfortable with this situation?? Hoping to go to Bahamas in April 2010. Any rules we should be aware of? thanks for the tips!
tips for having doggie pee onboard?

Have you talked to your veterinarian? My dog's vet is a pretty smart and experienced guy. My terrier loves sailing but we never tried to teach her to go on the boat
If I am in a hurry when taking my dog for a walk, I take him where all the other dogs poop. Once my dog smells other dogs poop he HAS to go. When you go to the boat bag up some goodies to take with you.
To take your dog or cat into the Bahamas you need a permit. There are no quarantine requirements for cats and dogs. An application form and $10 will do the trick. The catch is that the pet will need to be seen by a local veterinarian within 48 hours of arrival in the country. The requirement is waived in the out islands that do not have a vet but in the main islands it is enforced. You may be able to download the application form online and get your permit via mail. Make sure to have the vaccination records and that the dog is in good health. As far as getting her to pee aboard don't worry after a couple of days she will do just fine. If you want her to go in a specific location, you may have to show her.

I trained our 2 dogs to "go" on our boat by waiting a day so they would need to go, took them up to foredeck on leash, my husband held each one while I lifted their tail and inserted a glycerin suppository in their rectum. Within a minute they both "went" and we were waiting with treats and atta boys. It was rather funny because one of the dogs had the funniest look on his face, like I gotta go, oh, oh. From that day on while we were living on our boat, they always went up by the bow. Before that, I had tried many things that didn't work.
