Hi There! I am a current owner of a '79 Catalina 25 SK. I am looking to move up to a Catalina 30. Found a '76 model with new mast/boom/furling/standing and running rigging (apparently, insurance covered the po's demasting 2 years ago). Boat has an Atomic 4 inboard. I plan to have a marine survey before buying - but are there any obvious issues with this boat that I should examine before I pay for the survey?? Thanks for your help!! BTW - why isnt the Catalina 30 owners forum working????

C-30

Forum is working. They are sort of lumpped together. It all works out okay. Read what interests you. In regard to the C-30, I have the same vintage boat. Things to look for would be chainplates and bulk heads. Especially the starboard side. Most of the older 30s have already had the upgrade kit applied. Looking at your replacement gear that has been upgraded, the only other thing would be bottom gelcoat blisters. I had plenty. You're survey is going to have a haulout isn't it? I wouldn't buy it without a haulout. Anyway, it has been a great boat for me and sails like a dream. I'd take a hard look at gettting a Garhauer ridgid boom vang. It has made a huge difference in sail shape and boat speed. I hope this works out for you. Sean S/V Carnaby Street

Be aware that..

Be aware that the '76 probably doesn't have a holding tank, my '77 didn't. No big deal, but it cost me close to $500 to install one including the holding tank, special hose (important don't skimp on the hose)and fittings (thru hull and pump out). Plus I did all the work myself. Also check the interrior wiring. That vintage boat had all the cabin wiring laminated into the fiberglass. Over the years the wire will absorb moisture and you'll have to replace it. I had to re-wire the whole boat including new fuse pannels.
