Tiny little zinc

I have a Beneteau 331. The zinc on the shaft is a tiny little thing that is called a Jeaneau Jr. They seem to last about two months before they are gone and need to be replaced. Has anyone figured out an alternative zinc system? Or do you all just relace the zinc frequently? I would appreciate any advice on this. Thanks, Liam.

2 months?

sure you dont have an electrical problem? Stnadard balls of zinc for shafts are at just about all marine stores..

electrolosis

sounds to me like there is electrolosis going on. the zincs should last at least a whole year (more in less and less salt water) check your electrical system, them see if anyone near your boat has a problem (if you are in a slip...check to see that there are no electrical wires in the water as this is a big cause) best of luck

What do you mean tiny little thing ?

How tiny is tiny? The normal size for a 1" shaft zinc is a very very large chicken egg, maybe a goose egg, but smaller than a baseball. Hmmmm.... I can't seem to think of something that is about the same size as new zinc. Let's step back a bit. What size is your shaft diameter? 1" or 3/4"? Is this zinc tiny when new, or is now tiny after it has been on the boat a while? If new, where did you get this tiny little thing? I usually put two 1" zinc on my shaft every 6 months. It should last longer, but other neighbors in the marina are using my zinc. I did a test during the last 6 months. I left my shore power cord unplugged. I only plugged it in after using the boat, then I unplug it after a day or two of charging. After 6 months, both my zincs were almost still like new. I have already told the marina manager, and he is going to be checking some of the surrounding boats to make sure they have fresh zincs.

I Get Two to Three Months Also

As do my neighbors in Marina del Rey (Mariners Bay). The docks are old, there are a lot of live aboards and some of the boats are marginal. So... there is plenty of stray current. The alternative to zincs is unaceeptable, so I'll just keep on replacing them. Of course, divers make $$ on the deal, so you want to inspect the old ones to keep them honest. They leave the old ones for me and if I am there, I get the old ones hand to hand. We also leave the AC and refrig on 24 X 7 which adds to the mix. Rick D.

1" shaft

I have a 1" shaft. The standard non-metric shaft zinc for a 1" is "C" Nut zinc and weighs about 1.5 lbs. I have a Beneteau and the shaft is metric. The only zinc that will fit is a Jeanneau Jr 1" metric which weights about 1/2 lb. The problem is that there is no mass as compared to the non-metric, thus it desolves rather quickly by comparison. I have seen the zinc fish that hang over the side and have been told that if your rig is grounded you can just hook the wire to a chainplate, but that just doesn't seem right. Does anyone know if that will work to protect the shaft and prop? Thanks, LIam.

call beneteau

Liam..... I work for a Beneteau dealership and I have NEVER seen a small "Jenneau Jr. " zinc on a 331. If the shaft is 1" they make laarger zincs for them. They also make zincs that screw on to the end of the shaft rith at the prop......they are smaller than the ones on the shaft but are added safety for the prop......... FYI ...I will check at the shop next week and see what they recommend.
