Will be putting the Timing Gear cover back this coming weekend. Question is should i apply the red color Permatex gasket maker to both sides of the gasket or just one side. If one, which side?

Very thin, both sides.. I usually use a finger to wipe it onto the flange face.. then put a gasket on top .. then wipe a bit of motor oil onto the face of the gasket that is showing.. then a very thin coat on the other flange.. seems to keep the gasket attached to one flange (in case you have to remove it) and seals everything very well.

A helpful hint

When replacing a gasket in a hard to get to location, or where it is hard to see if it has moved before you get it in place. Tie the gasket to the part with sewing thread, through the bolt holes. Keeps it from moving and assures it is in place, even if you can't see it.

Coat the engine side first then stick the gasket to it making sure all the alignment pins and holes are lined up. The coat the cover side and install. practice good torque sequencing
I prefer Permitex but there are alternatives.
