Time to repower Yanmar 3gmd

I currently have a yanmar 3gmd, which runs great but the block is rusting through from the inside. Basically, I've been using jb weld to keep it together. Since the motor is 28 years old and raw water cooled I believe the best remedy is to repower. My preference is to stick with Yanmar for ease of personal installation. I've been considering a 3gm30f, which I hope would be a pull out and drop in with minor alterations. The listed price is $3950 + core. The price is for a rebuild, including transmission, starter, alternator, etc.

My questions are... is that a good price and a good choice? Are there other Yanmar choices that would fit with little alteration? What would a new yanmar cost? Where could I purchase other engines? Suggestions for other brands and places to purchase?

If you are going to pay to have it installed, I suggest that you go with current technology and get a new engine. It will probably double the cost, but you will have a "new" engine and a factory warranty. The GM engines have been out of production for about 3 years and parts for them will likely become harder to get over the years.

I think you will find that these new engines are much lighter and probably smaller than the older ones too. They run much cleaner and consume less fuel.

Thanks Steve. My intentions are to install it myself. I don't have a problem with a newer engine but need suggestions on where to purchase, how much it will cost. My hopes are that someone can tell me where a better deal is that replaces the current diesel with little alteration.

Ease of installation vs cost

If your going to go new, the cost is going to be considerably more than the rebuild. Installation of the rebuild is going to be pretty straightforward. If going new, not sure about the footprint of the new Yanmars. You might take a look at the new Kubotas, if a new Yanmar footpring is going to cause you hassles. The Kubota engines have a good reputation, parts are much less expensive, as can be purchased from a Kubota tractor dealer. Is going to be a cost vs hassle vs dependability issue. If the rebuilt is from a reputable business, and has some warranty, I would not have a problem going with a rebuild.

The last four projects in the H37C "Hunter Owners Mods" are of my 2QM20 removal and 3YM30 installation: 2ttp://hunter.sailboatowners.com/index.php?option=com_kb&Itemid=267&cat_id=38&page=model&mn=37-cutter . The 3YM30 as you will see is narrower. I could have widened the engine bed rails but chose to modify the mounts(all seen there in pictures). Just the engine including installation was under $8000. in 2004. I struck a deal with the marina that if I purchased it from them they would use their equipment to lift the 2QM out and set the 3YM in for no charge. New prop, shaft, cutless bearing, and shaft saver obviously increased the cost.

The footprint can be seen in the Yanmar 3YM30 PDF I think. The weight of the 30hp is half of the 20hp.
