Testing stain removers.

Ok, I lied. I did not test all the suggested stain removers. At $10. a crack I stopped after two. Actually SnoBol toilet cleaner is not that expensive. But Behr's Deck Cleaner(Home Depot), FSR, and MaryKate ON/OFF are at least $10. The picture is a before/after. The after is where I used Behr's. I mixed it 1:4 in a bucket and just kept wetting the area with a sponge. After about ten minutes I wiped it with a sponge with fresh water. No scrubbing but several rinsings to make sure I got it off the gelcoat. I did not have access to a hose. I have another picture where I used SnoBol above the line. I could not tell the difference. Same drill, keep it wet for a few minites and then rinse well. No scrubbing. These are fairly powerful acids, one hydrochloric and one oxalic(SnoBol). Try some in a gallon of water and then add more until you get the result you need. Then rinse and rerinse.

Hi Ed. I painted my hull this spring...

...on my '79 h33. It was a lot of work but I did it right and I never mind working on Happy Ours, especially on an aesthetic project. I used a two part system from West Marine. Most of the time (95%, appx. 100hrs.) was spent on prep. Our boat was been abused and neglected for years prior to our purchase a couple of years ago. Yours probably won't need nearly as much work. When it came time to paint I rolled and tipped with excellent results. Five thin coats were applied. Each application took no more than one hour (you have to move fast). On a couple of coats I had a friend roll while I tipped. This makes it less stressful. Contact me if you want more info or pictures. By the way, thanks for all your advice in the past. I'm thankful to finally be giving you some input. Mike (bartellmike@aol.com).

Thanks Mike.

I will take you up on that free advice and pictures, but later. There just is not enough good weather left between now and, hopefully, a May departure for deeper water. We'll see how the PoliGlo holds up while we take Ladylove out of the Great Lakes for a couple of years. Maybe I'll be near your boat(in the Chesapeake?) and can take a close look. I guess I could use the marina paint shed but the cost to move her and spend two weeks in there is probably beyond my budget. Right now I am looking for a local source for the "eraser", the thing to take off the striping. And I am also looking for a close match in stripes, mine have really taken a beating. Thanks again.

check out the auto shop supply houses

Hey Ed, Look for your erasers at the body shop supply house. I had to call a car dealer and ask them where they purchace them. you will need about 2 or maybe 3 to get it all off, but, mine had lots more stripes than yours!
