Whatever you use follow the cautions. I'm guessing you will be painting in your shop. Ventilate!!! I remember a young lady in my old marina who painted the interior of her boat and went to sleep that night. The fumes from the paint she used killed her. Very sad. I know nothing about painting or gel coat; it's all a mystery to me. But please don't make our mistake of rushing into this. We wanted to spruce up our exterior - top sides, deck and coachroof. The boat had been white or off white. We asked a shipyard to paint her. When we came to see the work progressing they were painting using one pot with brushes. If you are having the hull top sides painted and the previous covering was gelcoat or two pot, do get it sprayed using two pot, which is stronger and gives a much harder, smoother finish. But while this was going on there was some discussion on this website about refreshing the gel coat. I wish I knew what that meant. Nothing could be more disappointing than the paint job we got. I used a product called AlexSeal Alexseal Yacht Coatings: Yacht Paint, Primers & Fillers for the Marine Environment | Alexseal Yacht Coatings. As the story goes, Alexseal was developed by the same chemist that created Awlgrip. The advantage that Alexseal has over other Linear Polyurethanes is that light scratches can be buffed out, and deep scratched touched up and buffed in. On other Linear Polyurethanes like Awlgrip, buffing destroys the finish. I sprayed it with good results using a 4 stage HVLP and a #3 tip. As other people have warned, 2 part Polyurethanes can be quite toxic. Some people can have an acute allergic reaction to even small amounts. What I quickly realized when I launched my Vega was that I'm a much better painter than I am a sailor. In the first couple months, while I was learning how to manage the Vegas infamous low speed and reverse manoeuvrability, I put a couple deep scratches in the haul while manoeuvring through the juggernaut of outboard motors in my marina.I can report that the Alexseal touched up well and that I haven't added any new scratches since.Bob FuchsSilentium

Larry,For the interior of my boat, I used Interlux's Epoxy Primkote (2 part) and used their Brightside (1 part) finish. On the outside, I'm using the Epoxy Primekote for the two primer coats and then Interlux Perfection for the finish. The Perfection is a two part linier polyurethane that gets excellent ratings for its hardness and how well it holds up. I used a flattener mixed in to the paint when I painted the deck so I wouldn't get as much glare. The hull will be glossy. I'm using the roll and tip method and it is working very well. Is it perfect? The process may be, but I'm not. Still, it looks 300% better than it did. On the deck I just primered all the nonskid areas and let the finish coats overlap a bit. I'll be using Kiwigrip to paint the nonskid areas. It's supposed to be very easy to apply and have great gripping. Practical Sailor gave it high marks.I'm using Interlux paints because we stopped being able to get the AwlGrip two part paints in California because of the high VOR of the paint. Any of the major brands will go a good job for you. I would stick with the two part paints because you will go much longer between repaints for about the same effort of applying. I have a number of pictures on my website that show the finish on the deck. I should start painting the hull in the next week or two, which should be a whole lot easier than the deck. The deck has so many nooks and crannies to try and paint into, not to mention all the masking. If you want to come down and practice how to roll and tip to develop your skills, I'll let you. :)Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield.net

Free painting…how could I pass that up…Hahahaha. I was thinking of spraying the boat, with only one arm working right now , I think it would be easier for me. When did I get old?…lol. Doc’s keep telling me it is going to take a good year or more before you can really use the arm. Right, I have been using the crap out of it, no strength to brag about, but it works. Hurts like hell but no blood on the floor so works for me. Larry Sent from Windows MailFrom: n4lbl alan.schulman@... Tentative at the moment with a good likelihood of being doable. Hopefully we will have some decent wind as it's been kind of absent for the past few days. We are trying to buy a camper for the pickup and that might get in the way but I doubt it. I've been itching for a sail. What did you do to your arm?
