As of today, Java our H356 is ready to head south. Everything that can be done is done. Waiting on some last minute spares to be delivered. Boat was short hauled this morning and got the bottom cleaned, new zincs, serviced the kiwi prop. Engine oil and filter plus transmission oil changed. Engine has been gone over by Zahnisers, rigging was inspected, new below deck autopilot. Upgraded to high output alternator, all electrical was inspected. New house bank batteries installed, old set Trojan T105's were approaching 7 years. LED anchor and steaming light installed.

All we need to do now is get the booze and food aboard and will be charging slowly down the ICW to Bahamas, Key West, Ft Myers. We might come back.

Oh, installed a new high gain WIFI antenna the should allow me to maintain contact.

Scheduled push date is Oct 15... subject to change due to weather or whatever Joan can dream up...

Everyone have a nice winter....

Be safe, take your time going down the ditch, and keep in touch. When you get to Marsh Harbor, visit with Don Wood, the sculptor/jewlery maker, at his shop/residence near Memorial Plaza. Give him a hello from Steve and Sheila Kamp from "Carolina", winter 07/08. Tell him the apples in Hendersonville were small but sweet this year.

I came up with an easy fall/winter dinner recipe that will work if you have an oven. With any winter squash, butternut is excellant, cut serving size pieces and put a boneless chicken thigh on each pieced, season well with salt and pepper and bake in a buttered pan until the squash is very fork tender. The drippings from the chicken season and flavor the squash. Add a green veggie and dinner is ready.

We finished the Dismal Swamp today. At the visitors center there was 11 boats rafted up for the night. What a PARTY!!! 8 of them were from Canada and they brought more cheese and cracker that dinner was not needed. I got on boat hooked on some real nice rum. Couldn't get them off my boat to sleep.

Dismal Swamp is dismal. No wild life no bird just black water and snags. Oh and watch out for the overhanging trees. There is no room to really to pass well. God help opposite traffic in this area.

C'mon Jim, the history of the canal alone is worth the trip. We passed some larger boats because you can go right up to the edge. Well unless you snag a branch with your mast! :) Did you encounter a section where it looked like the green of a miniature golf course?

Don't get me wrong, The history and beauty of the canal was worth it.

I was expecting some wild life to be around. I only heard one bird for almost the entire length of the canal, otherwise it was snags and trees. Because they have had some much rain, the feeder canal from Lake Drummond was slitting in and we bumped. The dredger was there and starting monday they were going to fix it.

And then you are at the mercy of the boat in front. If he goes 3kts so is everyone else. There was five boats headed south.

We came down the Dismal in mid August we were the only boat on the canal and had no problems. When we got to Elizabeth City the town dock looked inviting. We loitered just off the slip area checking windage and current, both of which were running from starboard side, then came in to an open slip numbered 14 bow first. My wife used a line from the mid ship cleat looped over the outer pileing as a spring to check our forward motion and then we eased on in with the bow about 2 feet from the face wall. As we finished tying up, one of the local kibitzers watching from the face wall said,"that was pretty neat, putting that beamy boat in that slip." it turned out that the numbers on the face wall designated the slip width, NOT the slip number. Our beam is 13 feet.

We are in St Augustine

We made the run outside from Hilton Head,SC to St Augustine. 26 hrs arrived about 10:30a on Nov 18... Have taken a mooring in the city marina and have hit two pubs by 8:00 at night.

Winds were 5-15kts all night with starboard quartering 2-4ft waves all night. Made for a rocking ride. No problems coming into St Augustine inlet. Will stay here for about

Life is good.
