Time for the Monthly Mixing Elbow Question...

Hi-temp exhaust sealant?
Not a sealant but definitely any type of parting compound. Makes it much easier to remove the graphite gasket which is composed of fine sheets of graphite.

Another trick learned over the years is to guide the casting attached to the manifold using a couple of pieces of threaded rod as shown. Really helpful when you're working by feel on the backside of the engine.

This shows four threaded rods but only two are required to attach the assembly. One rod at a time is then pulled out and the original bolts inserted.

When you use as much parting compound as I do, nothing sticks to nothing.

Diesels want to be run hard and not babied.
My 2GM20F sees 99.99999% of its running time at 2800 RPM. Only thing less is at warm up and coming back into the marina for a few minutes. Leaving the marina is part of the warm up time. No smoke, no nothing. I STILL wind up with a bloody mess of carbon inside.

I also suspect the carbon scale retains moisture which contributes to the corrosion.
A mixture of carbon and salt. I can't imagine anything better to promote corrosion.

ditto what mike said! I replaced the whole thing with the HDI setup - worth the money, beautifully made all stainless. It's really hard to get the manifold and connector apart - and resealed - the threads are probably rusted and galled.

Just bought the Stainless HDI assembly for Spring installation. It comes with a thread sealant already on the nipple part and a flange gasket. They have different length nipples if you want to raise the spill point and you have the room. Nice people at HDI. I have replaced my last Yanmar elbow. One of them failed after only four seasons at about 400 hours of use. Go with the stainless.

I replaced the whole thing with a replacement from HDI about three months ago. Couldn't be happier. Just replace all of it, manifold, elbow and coupler along with the exhaust hose to muffler. Its to much of a pain to get it apart to not do so. The HDI bill was around $300 for all of it.

Well, I had already ordered just the elbow. I figured "I'm off work this week, so I'll just wail on that thing until it comes apart". After all, I have a big vice, a propane torch, penetrating oil, a hammer, and lever arms of varying lengths... Long story short: it didn't work! I clamped the elbow in the big vice and (after the penetrating oil, which has been on there for days) heated the manifold collar with a torch. Then I used a long ratchet extension in the hole of the manifold for leverage. No dice. Went out to the pickup and got the big breaker bar I use for changing the truck tires. No dice. Got a 5' length of heavy black pipe. Nope. In the middle there, I ended up having to attach my (heavy) workbench to the studs on the wall so it wouldn't rotate. It's not like I broke the exhaust manifold or anything, but it didn't budge one little bit. I did bend the pipe, though, and my vice may need some attention...

So after almost destroying my workshop, I just called HDI and changed the order to the full Monti: elbow, coupler, manifold, cooling water nipple, and gasket, all for only $335. I guess I should take advice more readily... :)

that's an option... or not...

I will say, much of the advice I've been given or read from others here is pretty spot on... now there is the occasional... well... you know...

Well, the young woman at HDI that changed the order from elbow to elbow/coupler/manifold laughed when I told her how much I beat on the thing, and said "We should really have a disclaimer on the elbow that says: do not order until you have the parts separated".

Oh that's funny! Indeed true!
