Allan, anybody can do that. In fact, my wife's father insisted that they do that for their propane BBQ for years. If you don't turn off the gas at the burners when you turn off the source that'll happen on any appliance unless equipped as Benny suggests, although it doesn't appear that what Benny described would help in this case, since it turns it off when the flame goes out, but he doesn't say what happens when it's cold to begin with.
