Ross, depends on your hull speed.

You should be able to make a 1-3 knots under most conditions.

Time your trip

Ross you have to time your trip to coincide with the tides. I've made the trip in two different boats, a 31' and my current 36', neither had/have any issues making headway on the bay. Yes you lose speed when against the tide but I've never encountered anyone sitting still as a result. If you time it right any speed you lose you'll more than make up when the tide turns. Don't forget you can run into nasty tides on the Chessy too. As far as anchoring to wait it out, just keep going. Slow is still better than zero.

Mike, I make frequent use of REED'S

for their tide and current tables. Sometimes motor-sailing just to beat the current.

Motor sailing

Ross we motor sail as well, especially on long trips where the wind is less than favorable. It gives you a nice boost and having a sail out helps settle the boat down in rough seas. We'll likely do it on our trip to Cape May. Based on your comments I take it your boat isn't the fastest 30' out there. Sometimes we give up speed for stability and comfort, nothing wrong with that. I have a roller furling main that in comparison wont generate anywhere near the power a standard main will. However, when I'm still in the cockpit and rolling that baby back in while some other guy is sweating like a dog on deck flaking his I suddenly don't mind the loss of performance. Just don't let the little things keep you tied to the dock.

Me as well

Jim, yep I get it too in big following seas, but not as bad as my wife. Fortunately we don't get that type of wave train down on the Chessy. Instead lots of short steep chop with spray that'll leave a nice salty layer all over your baby at days end.

Since Ross's thread seems to ebb and flow,

here is a nice tool that I use for keeping track of the tides. It works well for me on the West coast and I assume the same for the East. I have it loaded in my Treo 700p and use if frequently. AND ITS FREE! Frank

Caguy, That's a useful tool to be sure

REED'S current tables also give time and direction and speed of ebb and flood and time of slack water. The GPS will give similar information about the height of the tide at any station and time.

Ginger Pills

We just brought my bosses boat back from NYC (Jersey City) to Altantic City last night. I used ginger root pills instead of the patch. I temped hate by eating a sandwich with roasted peppers on it for dinner last night. The ginger pills worked good!

Jack the boat is

It is a Hans Christain Square ended in slip F-61 (I think 61). My boss made me come to work. Can you believe that. Sail all night then off to work. My boss is taking off tomarrow and sailing her back to Baltimore.
