My Hummingbird "el-cheapo" depth sounder [circa 1988] finally died and it is time for a new one. Before I go buy another "el-cheapo" does anyone have any working knowledge of new features/technologies (other than an anchor alarm) that are practical on a saiboat that doesn't do any fishing? I looked around and find all kinds of new gee-whiz gizmos that you can get, but does anyone really use it? -- espcially on a saiboat that is screaming at 6 knots? Thanks for any advice.

I have one of the 100 or less Hawkeye's and it does fine for me. Reads to .10 feet under 100 ft. had a shallow alarm, nice readable numbers. Does all I want it to do

I have a hummingbird that has a depth alarm as well as a fish alarm that works well for me. I set mine up for AAA bateries so I can more easily move it around and don't draw down my 12 volt wet cell. Novelman

20 years of service and no respect??
The cheapo lasted almost 20 years...that's pretty good. There are some on the market for under a hundred. Mine was under a hundred. I also have a $79 fish finder. If I had a better place to mount it in my cockpit I'd use it instead of the digital depth only. Some fish finders will show if the bottom is soft mud or hard rock and the trend of the depth is sometimes better than just a number. I've used both fish finder and number only and prefer the fish finder. I just don't have a good place to mount the display.

All I want is depth when I turn it on. I don't care about alarms, although my current Hummingbird has a depth alarm. The Hummingbirds are good and cheap. An unusual combination. If I needed a DS today I would look at Hummingbird first.

I don't know where you sail so I can not
comment on the usefulness of knowing the bottom contours on your sailing ground. But being able to know the slope on the bottom while we are tacking down the channel is very helpful. In one case we watched the slope and at eight feet the helm called "ready about" and told me that we had six feet when we came up on the other tack.
