Simple answer ..... you have to measure the slope of the hull (in degrees) where you intend to install the thru-hull. If the 'slope' is closer to 12 degree then thats the one to select, If closer to 20 deg., then choose that one. All this 'selection' so that the installed depth sounder transducer is essentially 'pointing straight down'.

For a sailboat, The 'best' installation will be on the centerline at 0° slope .... which in most cases requires some rigorous fiberglass work to accomplish.

BTW - bronze transducer thru-hulls are much safer and smarter than 'plastic'.

Are the through hull transducer more effective than bonding to the inside and shooting through the hull?
I just bought a brand new Garmin 398 on Craigslist, $100, that came with a transom mounted transducer. I used one on my old boat but I am considering just epoxing it to the inside bottom of the hull. The boat has a through hull transducer that went to a SR Mariner (not working).

On my old boat I had a piece of 4 inch PVC pipe glued to the inside of the hull. I cut a round piece of plexi to fit inside and mounted the transducer in the plexi. Filled with water and it worked fine. I really only was concerned about how shallow the water was and not how deep so the range I might of lost was not a problem.
