Tillerpilot bracket

My tiller had a pin on the top for the socket at the end of the tillerpilot arm. Although the pin was at the proper location per the installation instruction, it was too high, so the tillerpilot angled upward to the tiller and never functioned as well as it should. As part of my tiller refinishing project, I cut the pin off, hoping to install a new one underneath the tiller using a bracket made by the manufacturer. The bracket arrived and it's totally unsuitable because of the curvature of the underside of the tiller. I'm now considering mounting either a stainless steel bracket or a one-inch thick hardwood block to the starboard side of the tiller. The new tiller pin can be mounted in either one. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance. Peter H23 "Raven"

Bracket Mounting

Peter We had the same issue with our tillerpilot on our former Catalina 25. I mounted the bracket underneath the tiller. Even though it was curved, with two good screws and lockwashers, it served well for over eight years (boat's now someone else's, still working after 12 years). There seems to be no reason to have a perfectly flat surface to mount it on, unless your tiller has a lot more curve than our C25's did. Good idea to have it horizontal.

Underneath

Had one on my last boat. Same problem. Fitted the pin into the underside of the tiller, turned the operating rod through 180° and used a small loop of bungee rubber to hold it on. Looked very neat and had the unexpected advantage that I could knock the arm off the pin if I needed to disengage the pilot in a panic. Hope this helps.

That sounds like a great idea. It's certainly a lot cleaner and neater than screwing a bracket to the side of the tiller. Thanks. Peter
