Does anyone know if either the Raymarine ST2000 or Simrad TP22 have a "freewheel" mode where it can stay attached to the tiller, yet be able to operate the tiller normally?

I'm considering a below deck installation that would require the tillerpilot to always be attached...

tillerpilot

Simrad: no. (Unless they've changed something in the last few years)

We had an ST1000+ that we used for 12 years and having to take it off he pin on the tiller was never a problem. Not even after gettin distracted and looking forward to see the light on a buoy just above the bow pulpit. I got the autopilot off the tpin and the tiller into my armpit in no time and thankfully we did not clobber (or more accurately get clobbered) by the mark.

Taking it off the pin isn't an option for where I want to install it.

I want to install the tillerpilot below deck in the lazerette. Due to my cockput configuration it would be a big nusance for seating to have the tillerpilot installed on the tiller (effectivly preventing seating in 1/3 of the cockpit seats).
