Tiller - What type of wood wass the original straight tiller made?

Hi All

My straight wood Tiller has broken. So that I can make a replacement that will last as long as the original {35 years!)can anyone identify which type of timber these original tillers were mad from?

I know that I can buy a curved laminated version from Steve Birch but I like the original straight version and do not wish to change.

I think mine, what was left of it, was teak but I made a new straight one out of sapele which is the species of wood used in the interior. I also did the cockpit seat hatch covers and the companionway boards of sapele.

Thanks for the quick response. Is you tiller happy with the amount of sideways pull required when steering?

David,
Mine is Teak and looks original. I like Frank's idea of using Sapele. I made the Ballad main cabin beam from a piece and it's plenty strong.

I'm usually happy with the amount of sideways pull required while steering, unless the genoa trimmer is not paying attention, in which
I adjust the amount of sideways pull by saying "trim". -Tim

I believe mine is original and it appears to be made of teak, but I suppose it could be sapele, like all the other wood on the boat.

David,

You could check Tijs van Vliet at www.helmstokken.nl , tillermanufacturer
familiar with the straight Vegatiller.

Tijs has produced a couple already for Dutch Vegakring members.

It's one of the reasons I really like sailing.
Usually the crew is my girlfriend, so I've got to take advantage of the only time I can get away with telling her what to do without a discussion. Tim
