We want to add a tiller control to our H26.5 "Chessie III" but we are concerned that we will clutter the open transom area. Also has anyone come up with a good way to raise and lower the outboard without having to put the ladder down and hang out the stern to raise the motor? We love the boat now we want to improve it.

Simpler is better

I have a H240 and also was considering a tiller tammer. However I was not impressed with the wheel locking mechanism or the idea of having the lines obstructing movement. So what I did instead was to attach an eye-hook to the underside of the tiller, at an appropriate distance for adequite mechanical advantage. And then attached a snap hook in the middle of a 12 foot cord. I have stern cleats on the H2140 and when I need to secure the tiller, I just get the cord out of the lazerate and snap the hook on to the eye-hook, and then cleat off each end on the stern cleats, at the position I desire. It works great, and is very secure during any wind conditions. The best part is that it can be stowed away when not desired, and it doubles as a securing device when the boat is in the slip. Hope this help, good sailing! Daniel, s/v Endeavor

motor mount

You can go from a fixed motor mount to one the raises up and down. With the reverse transom you will need to make an additional wedge type block for new motor mount to attach to the transom. YOu can get these motor mounts most anywhere are may have to order it but either way it is not cheap. As for the tiller control, there are varius opinions as to type and style but again what ever is done you will have extra line or hardware in the cockpit. One thing you might consider is a plastic insert attached to coaming wall that will allow the ball handle for a tiller extension to lay into and that might be of consideration

Mike you should use a better code than your e-mail address. Check the Layline catalog you can get a tiller ext. and then you get a locking ball that the tiller ext. fits into Ill show what im talking about the next time I see you. Cliff

Auto Pilot

The best addition to our H240 was the navco auto tiller (TP100 or 1000) When in use, it sits back next to the transom out of the way. I do have to reach over it to start the motor, but only requires a minor change in technique which is manageable. When not in use, it pops up easily and is stored below. You can use it in manual setting which stays where you set it or acts as a push button power steering. Or you can track the current heading. It is very accurate and frees you to move about the boat for minutes or hours. I can now sail completely solo with ease. The basic system which is the one I use cost around $300 from west marine. I wish I had it last season.

I also have a 26.5 that I used the eye and snap for one handing. I works great and is cheap. I am looking for any owners manual copy for a 1987 26.5. I will be happy to pay for the copy and time. My boat didn't have any manuals and I could use some information on mast setting and rigging. You can contact me by e-mail lhreynolds1@msn.com
