Has anyone installed a tiller tamer on this boat. The tiller profile is round. Can this device be mounted on a round surface? Thanks, Jeff S/V "Festivity" 1996 H26

Yes.

I first mounted the tamer on a small board and then used hose clamps to secure the board onto the tiller to determine the proper location. After sailing for a season, I mounted the tamer directly onto the metal tiller. It fits fine and has been very secure for two seasons. This is the best addition I have made to the boat since it allows single handing and is needed when you have to tack the jib.

Tiller extention

I have had both the tiller tamer and a tiller extention. The extention costs a little more but is by far the better unit!!! It extends for steerage from the gunwale or the stern rail seat and can be snapped into a fitting to lock the tiller or allow for tentioned movement. It is definitely worth looking into!

tamer

I've got em both.........the extension is most helpful for hiking out and the tamer will give you a quick break to run foreward. But it won't give you long. Just moving around on the boat will throw you off course. You've gotta babysit the thing.

Tiller Extension suggestion

I have an extension can be removed using a push pin-type of release. It extends or collapses with a twist. Very nice. But I had to replace the receiving unit that screws in the tiller. The replacement that West sells is beefy-er than the one that comes with unit. Might be worth asking for the good one when you order the first time! In combo with the tiller tamer it works out pretty well. Jim Loats s/v Grizzly Bear

Upside Down

We mounted the tamer under the tiller rather then on top.. the geometery seems to work better to the blocks. Secured as per instructions with out problem to the round tiller handle as far forward as possible.

Tillers, me and George

I have a 1994 23.5. The original tiller extension had to be replaced after a couple of seasons because the non-removable rubber connector rotted. I replaced it with the removable/extendable one mentioned in previous emails. The one change I made was to add a small machined aluminum block to make the transition from round tiller to flat flange around the insert which recesses into the tiller. The block is attached with screws to the tiller. Five seasons later it still works fine. I don't have a tiller tamer per se, but my buddy "George" does the trick with minimal cost, no maintenance, and no holes to drill. I run a line from the port stern cleat, make two or three turns around the tiller then tie the other end off to the starbord stern cleat. You can adjust the tension on the line as desired to allow minor adjustments or even tack/gybe, or tighten it down hard to hold the tiller fast while away from the helm. Hope this helps.
