Hi,I'm plannning to buy a Vega. I noticed on one I looked at that if I move the tiller sharply, it slips on the rudderstock. Is this easily fixed or could the shaft be worn out enough and have to do something major like replace the rudder?On some other Vegas I have seen, they have new rudders, one a spade, the other transom hung. It seems advantage of transom is better steering, especially in reverse, but presumably there are disadvantages to this too or Albin would have done it to start with. I'm wary about buying one of these when I don't know how well it was built really.Thanks,River

Search the group for rudder repair and go from there.
As for adding another rudder, you will basically be converting
a big water boat to a coastal cruiser. Rudder location plays a
large part on whether a boat tends to broach with following seas
or surf happily as a stock AV will. A large price to pay for a
little more control motoring in reverse.
As for gelcoat cracks and wear, these boats are getting a
little long in the tooth and are showing their age as to be
expected.

Aa far as a major repair goes it wasn't that difficult if you are mechanically inclined. I'd rate it as a minor major repair. It does detract from value of the boat and you should get it cheaper because of that. Figure on three to five days to do the repair.

About tween rudder layout. I am one who install help-rudder behind propeller.Here is what everybody has to know before make decision:1. Help rudder Arend Schram was installed on tens Vega.2. Vega with help rudder has better steering under the sail especial with tacking, and significant steering improvement under the power forward and backward.3. You have to use proper size and material for help rudder installation, to keep you boat strong and prevent fragile. All system create straitened hull at additional rudder installation place. 4. The best effect you can expect with 3 blade propeller and without combi. With two blade propeller combi equipped I move backward predictable, but not I expected. With 3 blade propeller Vega move under power and under the sail like car.5. It two full day job but it required some skill, and experiences if you want to have reliable and strong both boat and steering system 6. About blue-water capability, honestly it 50%/50% for boat and skipper. If Skipper not experienced and make wrong decision mother nature will not forgive them, does not meter how strong boat he has, but good skipper, move weaker boat everywhere.So I am installed help rudder and I am happy. For today did not hear any compliance's or accidents from people who has Vega equipped with help rudder.
