Tiller-rudder connection

If I recall, the tapered pin is cut off close to the rudder head at both ends. It would be difficult, at least for me, to determine in advance the diameter of the pin at the cuts. Length is then not the only issue.

Pin just needs to be width of tiller head as long as small end and big end seat flush. Your machinist is right - much easier to make a short pin using just the compound of the lathe. A longer pin might require offsetting the tailstock and machining between centers. Just for reference, US standard taper pins are 1/4" per foot (1/48) while metric pins are 1/50. You should be able to pick up a plain steel taper pin at a good hardware store (my local Ace hardware has them for about a dollar), test fit it and mark it for length, and have your machinist make it in stainless. Not sure how your local hardware stores operate in the UK but this is a cheap way to make sure you're right. Easy job to make one of these pins, even for an amateur machinist like me. Ordered 4 from Grainger - hope they don't cancel as McMaster Carr did.

Thanks for info/advice.

Granger only deal business-to-business.

I'll see whether a local supplier can order from Granger on my behalf.

Hi John,

Try MSC Direct at www1(dot)mscdirect(dot)com

I've used them in the past with good results. Do a search on their website for tapered pin.

Hope that helps.

Direct email is fine.
Do you know the part number or some other id number for the pin you would like?
Common parts come to the Boulder store in a day or two, if they have to order it in, it could be a week or so. -Tim

Hi.

The McMaster Carr part/stock number is: 90681A293
See below for spec.

Two would be great, four even better but whatever makes posting easier
for you is fine.

Maybe email me offlist to tell me what I owe you?
Happy to pay in advance - I could just letter post you $10/$20 or
whatever in cash money?

Thanks

John

I archive many of my old emails that I think I might want to read again.
Here is the old email chain with pin discussion.
