Pin just needs to be width of tiller head as long as small end and big end seat flush. Your machinist is right - much easier to make a short pin using just the compound of the lathe. A longer pin might require offsetting the tailstock and machining between centers. Just for reference, US standard taper pins are 1/4" per foot (1/48) while metric pins are 1/50. You should be able to pick up a plain steel taper pin at a good hardware store (my local Ace hardware has them for about a dollar), test fit it and mark it for length, and have your machinist make it in stainless. Not sure how your local hardware stores operate in the UK but this is a cheap way to make sure you're right. Easy job to make one of these pins, even for an amateur machinist like me.
