Catalina 27 Mission Bay, San Diego
There's really only two choices... The small Simrad and the small Raymarine.... I have used the Autohelm 1000 that came with my Catalina 27 when I acquired it in 99.... Othere than me breaking a piece of the case's pin mount... which I fixed with marine tex... it has worked flawlessly.

The deal is, it's only another hundred bucks for the next size up... so most just get the larger one..... If you have 30 footer and you do a lot of motorsailing... then you might want the extra size. But in a lighter, smaller boat.. and you want to use it because you singlehand sail a lot... the smaller unit would perform wonderfully.

It really comes down to spending the extra hundred....

Another plug for the ST 2000. I have used it on my O'Day 22 and now a Wilderness 30.

I mostly singlehand and it is terrific.

O-day 25 shoal keel Valdez
I have the 1000 on a 25 O'day. It is really a poor choice. I have had mine in 2 times to raymarine for repair at $250 a pop. It is not waterproof and have to keep it in a plastic or it only lasts a couple sails before breaking again. I have figured out since then if I take it apart and scrub the circuit board with denatured alcohol and a toothbrush it fixes it. If the 2000 is not water proof I would go with the Simrod. Raymarines are junk in my opinion, but not having used the Simrod might be the same. Greg
