Newbie here, Hopefully my brother and I will be the owners of an O'day 222 tomorrow.. Thinking of adding the Raymarine ST 1000 tiller pilot as there will be great distances to sail on Lake Erie. Question does anyone have one of these? And is it adequate? Seems Raymarine recommends this basic model for this trailer cruiser. Thank You in advance for any comments pro or con.

Tiller Pilot

The tiller pilot that you are looking at will work great with that size boat. I had one on my Mac 26S that I sold and it worked great. If you want to tie in to your GPS, you might want to go to the next one up. but for your boat the ST1000 should be fine.

That's the one to go with.

We have used the ST1000+ on our G-26 for the past 5 years, and just love it. Our boat weighs a bit over 7000 lbs. and we sail on Lake Ontario. The autopilot does just fine for us on long passages. It does tend to start getting a bit "nervous" when there is a big breeze and a good chop (say 6 to 9 feet) with the boat rolling a lot on the water, but then you should be steering with the tiller anyways in those conditions.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
My H22 had one

My Hunter 22 had a Tiller Pilot and it worked great. I believe that it was the same model. I really loved having it but then I upgraded this year to a Catalina 30. I don't have autohelm yet and I REALLY miss it. It is a great feature to have, especially for long trips.

We bought the 86 O'day 222

That was advertised in the classified area on this forum. She's a Southern Belle from Tenn " GETAWAY " has not seen the water since Nov of '04 yet alone any of the great lakes. She is getting her rub railing replaced and a good spring cleaning and fit out and hope to set sail before June. All goes well she'll get her tiller pilot this summer. Thanks everyone for the nice response.
