I have purchased a "fixer upper" 30 ft. "75" for my retirement. Missing the rudder cap and tiller, I have manufactured the cap , but need a correct tiller length . Any one with a vessel of like length and year? I will have many questions later , have pulled the Yanmar out to rebuild(Boy was it heavy!) Yse 12 Any suggestions? Thanks in advance !!

for what it is worth

The tiller on my 20 is 42 1/2" long. I don't know how much longer the tiller for a 30 would be. The bow at the maximum point is 1 1/4" on the bottom and 2 1/2" on the top. The thickness tapers from 1 3/4" at the rudder to 1" hand end. If you are going to make your tiller a band saw is a great help. I did have the old tiller to use as a patern in making my new tiller. Maybe this will give you some ideas. Good luck.

See Hunter Manual at . . . .

(http://people.ne.mediaone.net/tlyons/tdl/hunter/pg24.JPG) Maybe you can get an idea from that drawing. I am assuming you are asking about the emergency tiller. Or was there a tiller version of the H30? All the ones I have seen were built with an Edson pedestal.

I have a 79 27'. It came with a tiller originaly, but had been 'upgraded' to wheel steering before I purchased it. I removed the wheel and went back to a tiller because I like the response of a tiller. I'm not sure about 30s, but a 27 that came with tiller standard have straight cockpit seats rather than the T arrangement. The wheel without the T cockpit was a pain (constantly climbing over the seats to move fore and aft of the wheel. West Marine sells several stock tillers for a variety of boats(not Hunters) but you need to determine the height (rise) that is comfortable for you and make sure that you have plenty of room to access the companionway without interference from the tiller and that the height is high enough to clear the cockpit seats. Beyond that, I don't think there are any critical measurements to consider.

Response to Help given thus far

Thanks again for all the input ,my 30 does have tiller steering , straight cockpit , and no provision for Emerg steering , appears to have had tiller steering from the factory ,which I prefer to wheel also. If any one has access to any make of 30 check out the tiller length for me .Thanks !! UNrelated to this but very interesting for me (Question rebuild of the YANMAR YSE 12)is the info about the Electric Motor @ Solomon Technologies:Wheel site.THANKS AGAIN

Good question, Cecil! I don't know offhand. But it's not really that critical. One of your primary concerns is room in the cockpit. A tiller too long can't hurt except to need a lot more room to swing it (or try an extension like a dinghy). One much too short can be positively monstrous to handle in moderate to heavy air. Your best bet is to wait for someone to measure his and respond, or just take a tape-measure round to a couple of boatyards! If I can dig up the original drawing this week I'll measure it and note it here. J Cherubini II

I will measure for you

I have a 1975 Hunter 30 which has what I believe is the original tiller. We live 3 hours away so we won't be going down for several weeks. Probably in late December to check out how it is doing on the hard. I will measure the tiller at that time. Please send me your email address so I can respond directly.
