I can tell that the tiller on my new (to me) 22 is a replacement and in addition, has been repaired. Could anyone provide a digital picture of what the original tiller should look like? I want to make a new one, but I want it to be as close to original as possible.

I don't know what the original looked like, but I replaced a non-original tiller on my Oday 23 with a laminated curved tiller I got at West Marine. The non-original tiller I inherited from the previous owner was a very nice straight stick of oak (rounded sides, etc.), beautifully finished. However, it was uncomfortable to have to reach down to steer, and when put hard over, it would invariably bump the knees of the person across from me in the cockpit. This new tiller has a broad, upward curve and is MUCH more comfortable to use. It also looks really cool. I highly recommend a curved tiller. The one I bought is made by H&L who made the original tillers for a lot of popular boats. Both West Marine and BoatUS (and I think Defender too) carry them. I bought model 112F, which is listed as the direct replacement for a lot of boats from 25 to 29 feet long. This tiller turned out to be the exact same length as my "original" non-original tiller. If you are a skilled woodworker, I would strongly suggest you make your replacement a curved model.

With a curved, laminated tiller from BoatUS. $50.00 and a few holes to drill. Can't beat it. AND - I don't have those distinctive bruises on my knees anymore. Geof

Teak Tiller
The orginal tiller on my (1972)"22" is made of aluminum tubing. I wanted something abit better. At West Marine I purchased a teak flagpole, shaved down the end to fit the stock fitting, used the orginal holes in the sides of the fitting for small brass wood screws and I was done. The "flagpole" cost less than $20.00. The "feel" and shape of the teak on the hand is very pleasant. Give it a try! Good Luck! Warren

A few days ago I ordered a replacement tiller (ash?) from Rudy at D&R marine (I also have that aluminum tube tiller, and want something a little cooler looking). It should be on its way. When it arrives, I'll measure it up, take a picture, and upload you the dimensions and photo.

Tiller
For what its worth I will add my 2 cents. I bought a replacement tiller from Rudy, but it was the straight, not so pretty, original. I used Rudy's aluminum rudder fittings and bought a new tiller from West Marine for an O'Day 27. It is curved (like other mentioned as replies). It's a beauty and fits just right on the 22. I use the Rudy tiller as a backup. Gene
