I have a tiller extension that doesn’t lock into place all the time. In fact when it gets wet, it hardly ever locks. I get better results when the handle and the shaft are completely dry. Anyone know how I can repair this? There does not appear to be any screws that I can unscrew to look inside. The tiller looks like a forespar, but I can't quite tell since there's no logo.

Replace the fitting

I have a model just like that. The fitting has a push button release on top and a positive locking device in the shaft. The parts are replaceable, although the piece required will likely set you back well over $40. There is also an alternative where the fitting screwed into the tiller itself, but then its always on the tiller.

It think he's talking about the adjustable..

shaft rather than the tiller connector thing. I have a similar problem on mine. There is a cam inside the tube that is either worn or slightly out of position. I have never tried calling the factory or taking it apart. What I have found is that a small bit of twisting rather than a big torque action will reset the cam so the shaft doesn't slide. If I'm sitting on the coaming, steering, and I feel it slip a little, I adjust it with a slight twist. That being said, I will will probably buy a new one when the budget allows, but it will be the kind with a button and trigger, rather than a twist lock.
