Tiller connection to rudder assembly

My H240 has four stainless machine screws that pass through the tiller head and thread into the square aluminum end of the tiller. The front two screws are tight but the rear ones are loose and can not be tightened. My choice is to retread with a larger tap, add new screws or,Rudder head.jpg drill through the width of the tiller end and push a stainless bolt completely through. I will probably do the latter. Has anyone else dealt with this?

Not specially that but if the bolt threads into the aluminum plate you are limited on how much you can tighten it as it will easily strip the threads. Seems much better to use a longer bolt with a lock nut if you can.

I appreciate everyone's input and have modified the end of the tiller. There is an adjustable bolt that rests against the rudder post to prevent the tiller from dropping too low and dragging. I had to drill a lower hole for it and tap it as this bolt would otherwise hit the rear cross bolt. I will take the assembly to the lake tomorrow and attached it to the rudder post assembly.IMG_20211220_160450850.jpgIMG_20211220_160455792.jpg
No problems with installation. The next mod will probably be a quick release cleat for the rudder line.
