There is a white plastic collar around the tiller post in my 1983 Hunter 25, to support the tiller. It has just broken. West Marine does not carry them. Can anybody tell me where/how to replace it?THANKS!
Same thing happened to my 1980 25' rudder post ring. Couldnt find one either. Made my own out of a piece of phoenolic from a machine shop. Made it on a wood lathe. Been fine for 2 years so far.
Any hard, slippery plastic will do to make this part. I used teflon for mine because I had some on hand. Keep in mind that this bearing holds the rudder in place. Do the part changeover on the dry with the rudder supported from below or it will drop out. best regards, Jim s/v Cygnus
Richard:I think that UV stabilized poly will do the job. If you have the old one you should be able to take it to someplace that sell this stuff. Be sure to get the UV stabilized stuff, so you don't have to do this again sometime soon.
After 18 years, mine broke too. Had a BLACK plastic replacement part made in a machine shop. The black part is important to stop UV degradation, as another writer has pointed out. The only purpose of this ring is to support the weight of the rudder when the boat is OUT of the water, at least on my boat, because the rudder floats. Try pushing down on the rudder head while in the water, and you should see the whole rudder post move down a fraction of an inch.
