tie a boat to a line

Does anyone have a knot suggestion for tying a small boat to a thick line. Specifically, I'd like to know how to tie a dingy to a large thick line holding a houseboat on shore. I'd like to do this without putting a loop in the thick line. I’ll be pulling the dingy parallel to the large line and attaching at two locations, near the bow and near the stern. Basically, the same thing you might do when securing a boat on one side to a dock but now the dock has been replaced by a tight thick line running about 1 foot above the waterline from shore out to a piling. An anchor is not an option. thanks for any help andy

try this

If I understand you, the house boat is tied to shore with a large diameter line. You want to secure a dingy to the large line. Try a clove hitch, with a safety. To tie a clove hitch, take your line from the dingy, and lay it over the large line. Wrap it around and back over, crossing it so that it looks like an X . Wrap it around again and tuck the loose end underneath itself. Then take the loose end and make an overhand knot around the line that goes to the dingy, so that the clove hitch will not come undone.

a prussik knot will also work

and will not slip along the line. The following link shows you how. http://www.ozultimate.com/canyoning/knots/prusik/

This may be dumb question, but...

Why not just put the line from the dink on a cleat on the boat? If you want to keep it next to the boat, run lines off both ends of the dink to two cleats on the boat--one forward, one aft. If you're rafted between two boats, tie it across the stern to both aft cleats.

Tripple-Sliding Hitch

Roger is right, a Prusik Knot (also known as a triple sliding hitch) is a good choice for a smaller line hitched to a larger (messenger) line. The hitch is adjustable after tying (slide the whole knot along messenger), but remain fixed in place when “loaded”. Another choice might be the Klemheist knot. Andy probably wants to "suspend" the dink midway between shore & houseboat, not snug alongside. The Sheet Bend requires two running ends, and is for end-to-end connections, not mid-point attachments.
