Hoo Boy! Less than ten days until me and my boat are winging (read: creeping) out way up to our new home in CT (or NY... Or MI, things are still a little hazy). I've got myself a VA and MD Chartbook, and a HUGE "Chartkit" from Cape May to Nantucket (including aerial views, something you don't see very often from the deck of a boat). My question is: what do I need in the way of tides, currents, almanacs, "been there, found this 'n that" kinda information? Does anyone have a preference for a "Cruising Guide" for that area? There are several available. Thanks.

Hello, The "Eldridge Tide and Pilot Book" will provide all the tide and current for east coast of USA. It provides the information from Key West Fl to Nova Scotia Canada. You can buy it at many places, include on line at http://www.landfallnavigation.com/-bp002.html and many other places. ...comming up through NYCity, currents can be a huge factor. If you hit the lower bay just right you can make it all the way through Hell's Gate and into LI Sound in one shot. The East River can produce currents as high as 8 knots. Using those currents to best advantage can be a great asset. Like Barry says, Eldridge

Thanks! I've heard of the tides in Hell's Gate, in fact, I think non-powered boats are prohibited from that stretch because of the strong tides. Does Eldridge also recommend, or give details on where to overnight; good, bad or indifferent marinas, restaurants, etc. or should I looking for another publication as well?

Eldridge and Cruising Guides
Hi, Eldridge has no information on marinas or anything like that. It is a simple book - it contains tide tables for the east cost, and a few charts that detail the currents for various areas. Note that the charts are not for navigation - the only show the relative speed of the currents in the area. For example, in the Long Island Sound, the current is much stronger in the middle than near either coast. By using the Eldridge guide, you would know to sail in the middle of the sound to take advantage of a fair current, or near the shore to negate a foul current. Eldridge also give a few hints for timing tricky areas like Hell's Gate, and how to time your trip from Long Island sound to Buzzards Bay. If you time it right you get a fair current for the entire trip. There may be more, but since the LIS is my sailing area, that's the only section I paid attention too. There are lots of cruising guides that do list marinas, restaurents, etc. For example, I have the Atlantic Cruising Club’s Digital Guide to Long Island Sound www.atlanticcruisingclub.com Barry
