I'm looking for a Tide/Clock for my boat. All the ones I've seen say that they are calibrated for the east coast. What does that mean? I live in Oregon, will this be a problem? Are there any Tide/Clocks calibrated for the west coast? Thanks for the help (again!), you people are great!

Tide watches

I have noticed the same thing. Most tide clocks advertised seem to be east coast only. I work at a beach resort in NC and we need to know tides on a daily basis for kayak rentals. One of the guys at work just got a tide watch. It is programmable for east coast, west coast, or almost anywhere else. Maybe that's an option for you. The brand he got is Rip Curl, but Casio and a couple other companies make them as well. His watch has a really neat graphic showing both state of the tide and whether it is rising or falling. You can also get future tide times.e paid around $120 for his, but there are cheaper models at both West Marine and Boaters World.

West Coast Tides

I believe the reason for calibrated east coast tide clocks is because the high and low water levels, and the time between high and low, are about the same in any given day, called semi-diurnal tide. On the West coast, they're called mixed tides, which mean the highs and lows are not the same level, and do not occur in the same time span every day. Chapman's chapter 15 page332 explains it better than I. Hope this helps. Ken

Palm Pilot with a free tide program

I think the name is "Tides" of all things. It had the national tide database availible or just regions of the country. It will also show sun and moon information, graph tides in color, and is accurate any time of the month. FWIW, Scott

west coast tide clocks

I believe Ken is correct. When I looked into getting one to compliment my barometer, I was given a similar explanation to Ken's by both West Marine and Boat US "experts". the funny thing is that they sell the East coast clocks in the San Diego store. I imagine for a west coast tide clock you would need a digital watch with the tide program built into it. Or just purchase a newer handheld GPS. They all seem to have tide info now. My Garmin 76 has that and lots more.

new GPS have tables for all major locales

Some of the new handhelds (I won't mention brand) have tables for all US and (I think) some nearby waters. This is better than a clock since the tide can change by just going up the coast.... Unfortunately, it just isn't in my budget right now.

Palm Pilot Tide Tool

The free program is called Tide Tool and it is the greastest reason to buy a palm pilot and keep it on your boat. Garim is making a gps with palm pilot software I bet this would be a great deal for anyone looking for both a palm and a GPS. Tide tool has very acurate tides for any where in the US any time. It has helped my cruising a lot.

Book It

For absolutely no $$ you can get a FREE little book with tide tables for any year at West Marine or any other marine outlet. It uses NO batteries, and cannot fail unless your eyesight does. The internate also provides a great resource. Why complicate life?
