New owner of a '73 Dinette model. 8 HP Honda outboard. A lot of good things have already been done to the boat, but overall maint. has been neglected. So some questions Thru hulls are the original pieces of pipe wrapped in FG to stiffen them. The valves have been changed to ball valves, but I'd really like to put seacocks in with my next <first> haul-out at Christmas time. Some recommend making a shaped pad of plywood or phenolic impregnated fiber, others build up a pad of fiberglass. Has anyone used the high density poly like Starboard yet? Suggestions are welcome Winch servicing, boat was retrofitted for Spinnaker and has 2-16 Barents and 4-10's. Does anyone know if the springs and pawls in the Lewmar kit will fit? And the "circlips" on the top, too? Or should I try to get the parts from Australia? I measured the T tracks on the boat, and they come between 7/8" and 1". What was really installed? I won't know what the rudder shaft and bearings are like until I drop the rudder at Christmas. Any suggests about replacement bearings? Installing a zerk fitting for grease? Judy B seems to have no problem with just cutting into the headliner, I'm a little more chicken then that, but I do want to rebed my lifeline stanchions and that seems the only way to get there. Jim, standing in a cold shower, comtemplating tearing up $100 bills :)

About the thru hulls....do a search on them in the archives, specifically from Garry from s/v Tashtego (hope I go that right). One of the best writeups ever and it's specifically for c27's. I'd use epoxy saturated marine ply. You can rebed the stanchions without cutting the liner. It's not fun though. Judy cut the liner to install good/large backing plates. And...you can actually call catalina 818-884-7700, give them your hull # and they'll tell you exactly what was originally installed. You gotta love that they're still around and support customers of their used boats. Peter

Other options.....

Suggestions are welcome ----------------------- Buy a couple of cheap white kitchen cutting boards (about a 3/8 to 1/2 thick). Use hole saws to cut the inner and outer diameter holes (inner first). Wood will absorb moisture and swell. Bed the backing and thru hull with 3M 5200.

A little more study on HDPM

Thanks Jeff, I did a little more study on using high density polyethylene like Starboard, http://user1004094.wx18.registeredsite.com/board/index.php and they don't sound too optimistic about attaching FG and HDPM. It appears that almost all glues just won't stick, and even 3M 5300 will only act a caulking material. And then there is the problem of the HDPM taking a compression set over time and allowing loosening of the fastenings. I now think that using polyethylene plastics here just isn't a good idea.
