While carefully putting bottom paint on the speed wheel thru-hull, some of it must have gotten into the spoke, and now the thing is sluggish. This is extremely frustrating since I just replaced the darn thing for an electronics reason, and the rewiring is time-consuming. Should I try paint remover, forced air, or what? Thanks.

Sand it?

If you have the dummy plug pull the thru hull and try doing some light sanding or scraping. You may find it's just in one area and may be fairly easy to remove. Good luck.

Thru Hull paddle wheel

It should be easy to remove it from inside the boat. The sensor unit is removable after the SS pin is removed. Put a bit of vasaline on the body when you put it back. Good luck.

I've got one of these also. Forever having to clean it. Been reading there pretty much outdated. Get a GPS, even the cheap ones will tell you your speed.

paddle wheel vs GPS

keep the paddle wheel. Just sand down the paint high spots on the paddle and you will be fine. Then you can use that GPS to compare to the paddle wheel and have a guess as to the strength and direction of the current you are sailing in. And you have a backup to the GPS for when (not if) it goes out.
