I have a leak in my depth meter and tachometer thru-hull fittings. I want to take them off to re-bed. I am having trouble removing the nut on the inside because it moves the whole fitting. I have not been able to HOLD or get a grip on the thru-hull fitting long enough to loosen the nut on the inside. Not enough room on inside as you look back under your legs to get an oversized pair of channel locks on the nut. The fitting under the boat is recessed into fiberglass. Manufacture suggests cutting it out as only option. Any wisdom?

This what I would do. First clean all paint off the flanges, look for two notches across from one another. If there you'll need to make a tool at will span and fit into the notches. This will hold the unit while the nut is removed.

If there is no notches, I would drill two small holes (say 1/8") directly across from one another in the middle of the flange. Then again make a tool (spanner wrench) to fit the holes once again holding the flange while the nut is removed.

Hope at least you have another idea other than destroying then sending units

Thanks Ken,
I do not know if this was your origianl idea. Yet, it worked great. The anxiety was not worth the money or the effort in the removal. Most of my time was spent looking to buy a tool to easily assist in the removal. After giving up trying to BUY a spanner wrench that would work, I invented just what I needed from a 1 x 2 piece of solid wood and two 1 1/2 inch wood screws. I pre-drilled all my holes: into the wood and then used those holes as guides for drilling pilot holes into the thru-hulls. I inserted the screws through the 1 x 2 into the thru-hulls just enough to hold tight. I went into the cabin with the bought super wrench and held the nut while my friend on the bottom outside began to unscrew the flange. Thirty minutes at tops. No fiber glass damaged. Hope this helps anyone else that has been blessed with thru-hull penetrations.
Kyle
