Here is a shot of my old Chrysler 22, anchored at Isla Mujeras, many years ago. This is back when I was young and dumb, 10 feet tall and bullet proof.

Very nice! Wish I was lucky enough to have a boat like that in my younger years

LOL, how young is young and how old is old? I'm pretty sure I've only shrunk a few inches and although I know I'm not bullet proof I am pretty sure I'm still bullet resistant! :D

I, too, used to think I was invulnerable.

Now, I find I'm just immortal. :D

When i was 18 or 19 my best friend got a sunfish for Christmas. We read the instruction book and slapped it on top of his mom's station wagon and off to the river we went to go sailing. Neither of us had ever sailed a boat and this was the day after Christmas on the Missouri river. We had to push ice flows out of the way to find clear water. Talk about young dumb and invincible, at least I was hooked on sailing from then on. Oh, and hyperthermia hadn't been discovered yet.

Yeah I did Claude

Sailed out of Galveston. My navigation equipment consisted of a single large scale chart, and a compass. Took nine days going, only seven coming back. I didn't know come here from sick em in those days. When I got too tired to go on, I would drop the sails, and just drift while I went to sleep. I aimed for the center of the Yucatan, west side, and then followed the coast line around.

Great story. Reminds me when I was 17. I built a Sunfish out of wood from plans in a Popular Mechanics magazine. I didn't have money for a Sunfish mast/boom rig (lateen?). I found an old sail and made a cat rig using 2" pvc pipe for a mast and 1-1/2" pvc for a boom. First time I took it out was with a buddy of mine. We tied it to the roof of my VW Bug and headed to the Mississippi River. Needless to say we failed miserably. The mast bent and the current was taking us downstream at a pretty good clip. My buddy abandoned ship and swam a quarter mile to shore. Luckily I did bring a small paddle and was able to get to shore a few miles down. It got better though. My older brother bought me an actual aluminum mast for my graduation present. I had some great times on that boat......but stayed in the bay from then on :)

I think I bought those same plans years ago but never built the boat. My friend got his Sunfish and that was that.

I'd reply in more detail but I'm spending all my time avoiding those things that would test my immortality.

That is impressive, Sailaway78.. Quite a crossing. I have not known anyone to cross in a 22 foot boat..

There was

Claude, there was a guy along in that same time frame who did it in a 22 or so Whaler outboard rig. If my memory isn't too far off, he was a Mercury dealer and did it as a publicity stunt. Probably the reason you haven't heard of anyone else doing it, is because I was dumber than most.
