Through - hulll penetrations on H34

I am looking at my through - hull penetrations on my 1983 Hunter 34. This is a picture of the cooling water penetration. It appears like wood is sandwiched between the 'nut' on the inside of the boat and the 'flange' on the outside of the boat. Is this common? Thoughts?

My '85 model has the same stuff there. It was (is?) really common to have used marine plywood as the thru-hull "washer".. on many production boats. Stuff like G-10 was not generally available for those reinforcements when our boats were built.

Wood backing plates are obviously prone to rot and you might want to replace it (them) if questionable. And while you’re at it, the hose clamp is the wrong type and should be double clamped.

My 1988 Hunter 33.5 had similar configuration. When I replaced the thru hull fittings, I fabricated new plywood backing plates and applied a couple coats of epoxy. Had plywood & resin on hand so no out of pocket expense for the backing plates.

And while you’re at it, the hose clamp is the wrong type and should be double clamped.

Hose clamp..
AWAB 316 Stainless clamps are better for the application than the two in the image on your boat through hull.
The features:
