I'd do alot in the water. However installing a through hull is not one of them. I guess if you could tilt your boat using the halyard you could get to it good enough. Then you have to keep it like that until it dries. I don't know about doing it that way but I can't wait to see how it turns out. Keep us posted.

Yes, we are changing the thru hull in the water. This same diver changed out my stern tube, pulling the prop shaft, etc. in the water three years ago so I trust he will do a good job. I will post photos of the completed work after Wed. We are changing it out Wed. afternoon. I assume he will use 5200 to seal the thru hull but will let you know when it is finished, what was used and how it went.
This is direct from 3M and applies to all their marine sealants.

A wet hull, in the water, is a lot more wet than rain. If you are comfortable with this then go for it..

BTW, I wouldn't use 5200 on the through-hulls... you will need to remove them at some point and 4200 or 4000 would work just fine but be far more manageable when you need to remove them.

Are you changing the skin fitting or just the ball valve? 5200 doesn't really cure in water. I've tried. I'd be even more worried about 5200 fast cure. Splash Zone or some other underwater epoxy will cure but epoxy is even harder to undo than 5200.

New thru hull install

We removed the old broken raw water intake thru hull this afternoon and replaced it with a new one. The diver did use 5200 to attach and seal the job. He says he has installed in the water thru hulls as large as 4". The photos show: (1) the old thru hull; (2) ready to take the old one off - you may be able to see water coming in around the thru hull, and; (3) the new one installed and ready to go.

Did he just put 5200 on a through hull and then jump in the water with it, pull the old one out and stick the new one in?
Is that a zinc on your prop shaft inside the boat?
By the way thank you for documenting that and sharing it. Now I can say I have seen that done.

In water change out prep

This diver has done a lot of work like this and has a system down. One of the first things he did was put a very thick bead of 5200 around the thru hull. He said to leave it in the sun so that the 5200 forms a "skin". He then went about preparing to take the old thru hull out. Likely took about a half hour to an hour before we were ready to install the new one. I imagine the set up 5200 better fills the hole around the thru hull and seals better when it is cured a little. The whole process went smoothly.

As far as the zinc goes. Yes it is. A few guys on this site said that their prop shafts have backed off the boat when running in reverse. One fix was to add a zinc before the gland. It seemed to be reasonable and since I had an extra I just put it on. Don't really think it adds any rust protection, but it doesn't hurt either.

Photos please!

Where can I buy a small thru-hull for raw water intake (for an A/C)? Any suggestions on particular models? This doesn't need to be very big since its a Mac 26x and a 7000 BTU A/C. Freshwater too, if that makes a difference...

my ericson , after purchase needed a thru hull replaced in water--i wasnt gonn ahaul for it---so it was replaced in water for what yuu described as a price for hauled boat in a yard...donot go there--that place is ripping you off--my entire replacement of all thru hulls out of water plus paint in san diego, where prices are double just "because"...was a total of 1800 including haul and launch and painting.....my ericson is 35ft.....gooood luck...my replacements are bronze with new seacocks replacing old gate valves----find a different place and make sure the prices arent rip offs..my only screened one is the one for engine intake....gooood luck...
